Okumura is a duke's son, chosen by the Kirigaya family as a suitable match for Satoko. On paper he is everything her family wants: rank, respectability, and the promise of a secure future.

The story complicates that picture. Later, Okumura becomes involved in seeking treatment for Satoko's heart condition. That choice muddies any easy reading of him as the villain of a love triangle — he is, at least partly, someone trying to do right by her in the only way he knows.

He functions as the embodiment of the life Satoko is expected to choose, which makes her refusal of it all the more meaningful. It is not that Okumura is monstrous; it is that he is not what she wants.
