The protagonist · Firefly Wedding (Hotaru no Yomeiri)

Satoko is the daughter of an earl, raised to see marriage as a duty to her family rather than a choice of her own. She lives with a serious heart condition, and that fragility shapes how the people around her treat her — as someone to be managed and married off, not someone with a will of her own.

The turning point comes when she is kidnapped. Instead of pleading with her captor, she turns to Shinpei Goto, the assassin holding her, and proposes. It is an impulsive, desperate move, but it is also the first time she seizes control of her own life.

From there she follows Shinpei into Tennyo Island's red-light district, where she passes as a courtesan while he works as a killer. Her story is about trading a gilded cage for a dangerous freedom — and paying the price for it.

Later, the plot reveals that the kidnapping was arranged by her own father. She is dragged home and pushed toward an engagement with Mitsuharu Okumura, refuses, and returns to Shinpei to marry in secret. When her heart fails and she appears to die, it is decades before a letter reaches Shinpei and proves she survived.
